Two New Hampshire 4-H members received $1,500 scholarships from the New Hampshire corporators of the Eastern States Exposition (ESE) at The Big E fairgrounds in West Springfield, Mass., on Friday, Sept. 22. David Hammond of Chichester and Turner Jennings of Center Barnstead were awarded the scholarships during a special New Hampshire Day reception. Two New Hampshire FFA members also received scholarships.
Hammond is a Pembroke Academy graduate and the current president of the Merrimack County 4-H Junior Leaders, a county youth leader for the N.H. 4-H Teen Conference and previously served as treasurer, vice president and president of his local 4-H club. He is involved in many activities, including career exploration, citizenship/government, community service, food preservation, leadership, public speaking, and others. Hammond has received multiple 4-H honors for photography and has participated in community service activities including Operation Santa Claus, Capitol Region Food Holiday Box program, Wreaths Across America and Friends of Forgotten Children. He plans to attend Plymouth State University with a major in interdisciplinary studies. With an interest in plant biology, Hammond says his goal is to produce plants that will grow in challenging climates.

A homeschooled scholar, Jennings has participated in 4-H for 12 years. He has participated in Strafford County Activities Day, county and state textiles revues and Eastern States Exposition speeches, demonstrations and textile projects. He received the “Top Exhibitor in Science and Technology” award at the Rochester Fair from 2009-2012; the 2011 4-H Spirit Award; the 2016-2017 State Achievement Award and the 2015 Strafford County “I Dare You” Award. He currently serves as president of the Strafford County Youth Leadership Team, secretary of the New Hampshire Teen Conference Planning Committee and previously served as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and reporter for the Farmyard Friends 4-H Club. Turner plays the accordion, is a member of the Pittsfield Players Community Theatre Troupe and loves rock climbing. He plans to attend Northeastern University with a major in engineering.
The ESE New Hampshire Corporators Scholarship Committee has awarded over $156,000 to FFA and 4-H youth from the Granite State since the program began in 1979.
