UNH Extension is excited to welcome Laura Alimayu as a healthy living specialist for Merrimack County. Alimayu comes to Extension with a master’s degree in education focused on nutrition and with experience working as a nutrition educator for the UMass Extension Program and as project leader for central Massachusetts, where she was responsible for overseeing both the SNAP-Ed and EFNEP programs for the region.

After the birth of her son, Alimayu opened a licensed family childcare program with her mother while she ran a before- and after-school program. Alimayu went on to complete her dietetic internship with Wellness Workdays, finishing up mid-pandemic.

Growing up as a competitive athlete, Alimayu learned through high school health courses that she could improve her performance through nutrition and pursued nutritional sciences at the University of Connecticut. During her undergraduate years, Alimayu volunteered and later worked for the SNAP-Ed program. It was there that she fell in love with community nutrition work, always learning about the community through the individuals with whom she interacted.

Alimayu is very excited to get back to community nutrition as part of the UNH Extension team. She is looking forward to learning about and addressing the barriers to health and wellbeing that N.H. residents face. Alimayu believes that through policy, systems and environmental changes, we can provide a richer learning experience for N.H. residents, helping equip them with the tools to make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Outside of work, Alimayu enjoys spending time outdoors and vacationing to Conway with her family. Some of her favorite activities include playing soccer, hiking, snowboarding and sipping coffee on her patio in the morning. Most of her free time, though, is spent playing with her four-year-old son. Alimayu is excited to learn more about the UNH Extension team, their work and how she can use her passions for nutrition and youth education to make a difference in N.H.
