Mosquito borne disease in New Hampshire

Late summer and early fall is when the risk of mosquito-borne diseases is the highest in New Hampshire. So far, there have been 12 batches of NH mosquitoes that have tested positive for diseases… all of them West Nile Virus. More are likely to turn up before the disease season ends (with a hard frost).

The risk is highest in the Manchester area, though Rockingham county and Keene also have slightly elevated risk. To reduce your chances of becoming a victim, reduce your chances of getting bitten. Choose clothing that exposes little skin and consider wearing repellant, especially within an hour or two of sunset.

Alan Eaton wrote Eastern Equine Encephalitis and Mosquito Management in New Hampshire on mosquito management (and the diseases they spread in New Hampshire)

He also wrote Insect Repellents [fact sheet) that offers many options.

We recommend  checking out the latest mosquito-borne disease risk map from the NH Division of Public Health:

One final word: The good news is that so far NO indicators of Eastern Equine Encephalitis have appeared this year.  It is much more serious than WNV.  Protect yourself, and be safe!!
