• Pesticide Certification

Foresters may be interested to know that a Supervisory certificate in Category C1 – Forest Pest Control allows applicators to apply general use pesticide products in the general forest setting on other people’s property and to charge a fee for doing so. They would probably also like to know that the previous requirement requiring years of experience under another person with a supervisory license has been removed. The requirements now are, in part, to take no less than 8 hours of training in “general instruction” and no less than 8 hours of training in category-specific instruction. Additional requirements are explained in this resource from the N.H. Division of Pesticide Control.

The “forest setting” is defined as the stand interior, which doesn’t include the forest edge (covered by Category B – Right of Way) or landscape (covered by Category G1 – Shade & Ornamental) situations. An example of Category C1 treatment would be a stem injection or basal bark application of an insecticide to prevent or control emerald ash borer or hemlock woolly adelgid. Another example might be a spot application of herbicides with a backpack sprayer to suppress glossy buckthorn in the understory before a commercial harvest. As the title suggests, only general use products are allowed under this certification. Restricted use products are not permitted.

Anyone interested in this certification will want to sign up for the Core (general) training on February 13, 2018 and the Forest C1 (category-specific) training on February 21, 2018 before taking the certification exam. Learn more about these trainings and register here. Each training day is also approved for 8 recertification credits for current applicators.
